Living well with IBS: food, herbs and the gut-brain connection

Living well with IBS: food, herbs and the gut-brain connection

Naturopath and Dannic Drinks founder Gail Matthew shares tips on managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome..

If your stomach has a mind of its own, you are not alone. Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, affects a huge number of people, and yet it is still one of the most misunderstood digestive conditions around. Bloating, cramping, unpredictable bowels, and that constant background noise of "what did I eat this time" can wear a person right down.

The good news is there is a lot you can do. IBS responds really well to a steady, whole approach that looks after the gut and the nervous system together, because the two are far more connected than most people realise.

The gut-brain conversation

Your gut and brain are in constant chat with each other through what naturopaths and researchers call the gut-brain axis. When you are stressed, your gut feels it. When your gut is unhappy, your mood and stress levels feel it right back. This is why treating IBS is never only about food. Calming the nervous system is every bit as important as sorting the digestion.

Food first, and the FODMAP approach

For a lot of people with IBS, a low FODMAP diet is where real relief begins. FODMAPs are a group of fermentable carbohydrates found in certain foods that can trigger bloating and discomfort in sensitive guts. Following a low FODMAP plan for a few weeks, then reintroducing foods one by one, helps you work out your personal triggers rather than cutting things out forever. Working with a naturopath or dietitian through this process makes it far easier.

Feed the good bugs

Balancing your gut bacteria is one of the most powerful things you can do for IBS. Fermented foods bring in a natural variety of live cultures that help the whole system work better. Think kefir, kombucha, sauerkraut, kimchi, and a good quality yoghurt. A small amount daily is usually better tolerated than a big serve once a week.

If probiotic foods are new to you, go slowly. Introduce one thing at a time and let your digestive system adjust before adding the next. With The Kefir Co Coconut Water Shots, start with just 5ml a day and increase by 5ml each week. With Kc Kombucha, begin with around 100 to 150ml a day. Rushing in can leave you feeling worse, not better. Gentle and steady is the way, and your gut will thank you for the patience.

Fibre, and why soluble is your friend

Fibre matters, but the type of fibre matters more when you have IBS. Soluble fibre, found in cooked apple, chia seeds, kiwifruit, carrots, and psyllium, is generally gentler on sensitive guts and helps regulate the bowels without adding to the bloat. It also feeds your good gut bacteria beautifully.

Herbs to settle the nervous system

A handful of gentle herbs can ease anxiety, calm the belly, and help settle the whole gut brain loop. Chamomile is a classic for tension and digestion. Lemon balm, sometimes called melissa, is a gentle balancer for the nervous system and lovely to sip through the day. Passionflower is a wonderful support for a busy overworked nervous system, and a warm cup of chamomile or passionflower before bed is a simple, effective daily ritual.

Slow down to settle down

You cannot outrun a stressed nervous system with food alone. Gentle yoga, meditation, deep belly breathing, and slow walks in nature all help shift the body out of fight or flight and into rest and digest, which is where healing happens. Ten minutes a day is enough to start.

A last word

IBS is not something you fix in a week, but it is absolutely something you can live well with. Food, herbs, movement, and a calmer nervous system all work together, and small steady changes add up over time. Be patient with your gut and it will start to be kinder back.

From all of us at Dannic Drinks, we hope this gives you a gentler path forward with your gut health.
