Two weeks in and thirsty for something more?

Two weeks in and thirsty for something more?

Naturopath and Dannic Drinks founder Gail Matthew shares some healthy and tempting alternatives to alcohol for Dry July and beyond.

Halfway through Dry July already. If you’re doing it, well done, your liver is grateful. But if you’re staring at a glass of water thinking there has to be more to life, you’re not alone.

The first fortnight is the easy bit. You’re motivated, you feel good, water tastes fine. Somewhere around now, though, that novelty wears off. Friday night rolls around and everyone else has something interesting in their glass while you’ve got lukewarm tap water.

Good news. You don’t need to white knuckle your way to August. There’s a whole world of alcohol-free drinks that are actually worth reaching for.

Kombucha mocktails

Why your body is loving the break

Two weeks off alcohol is enough time for your liver to start catching up on the backlog. It processes toxins more efficiently, inflammation drops, and your gut gets a proper chance to rebalance. This is exactly where fermented drinks earn their keep. Kombucha and kefir bring good bacteria and organic acids that support your liver and digestion at the same time you’re giving them a rest. Which feels like a nice bit of teamwork.

Kombucha, but treat it like a real drink

Kombucha, but treat it like a real drink

The trick with Kc Kombucha as a mocktail is to stop drinking it out of the bottle. Pour it into a wine glass, or a tumbler with a big ice cube. Add a sprig of mint, a slice of orange, or a twist of lemon peel. Suddenly it feels like an event, not a health drink. The natural fizz does the heavy lifting. All you’re doing is dressing it up.

Coconut water kefir goes tropical

The Kefir Co’s coconut water kefir has a light, slightly creamy note that plays beautifully with tropical flavours. Think of it as your holiday drink base. Over ice with pineapple juice and a squeeze of lime, you’ve got something that would honestly hold its own at a pool bar. And you’re getting probiotics while you sip.

Three mocktail ideas to try this weekend

Midnight Whisper Mocktail

Midnight whisper

Some drinks speak loudly. This one doesn’t have to. Deep, dark and quietly captivating, the kind of drink that stays with you long after the glass is empty. Made with Kc Wild Berry Kombucha, cherry syrup, a pinch of activated charcoal powder, cherries, a sprig of rosemary and ice.

Half Past Sunset Mocktail

half past sunset

Like the first cup of tea on a slow morning, Half Past Sunset is unhurried and warming, with a deep, spiced flavour. The kind of thing you wrap your hands around and sip slowly before the day gets loud. Made with The Kefir Co Original Coconut Water Kefir, hibiscus tea, fresh orange juice, sparkling water, a cinnamon stick, honey and ice.

When Ginger Met Basil Mocktail

when ginger met basil

It was unexpected. It was unplanned. But the moment these two met, something just clicked. Fresh, bright and a little bit electric, this is the drink you didn’t know you needed. Made with Kc Ginger Glow Kombucha, lime juice, basil leaves, honey syrup and ice.

Making it to the finish line

The last two weeks of Dry July go quicker than you think, especially when you’ve got something interesting in your glass. And plenty of people find that once August rolls around, they don’t rush back to their old habits at all. The reset stays with them.

However you finish out the month, the team at Dannic Drinks hopes you’re feeling the good things that come with giving your body a break.
